J.D. Wellborn Exhibition March 2010

J.D. Wellborn exhibition at Winterowd Fine Art

March 19-31, 2010

WINTEROWD FINE ART announces an exhibition of new paintings by J. D. Wellborn. Exhibiting in tandem with Mark Castator’s steel sculpture. The work of Wellborn’s featured in this show is comprised of small and large works of art that are acrylic paintings on paper. At first these works of art appear to be painted on tin or metal, or possibly tiles, but then the frail edges reveal themselves and the paintings begin to appear to float off of the wall.

In 2000, J.D. Wellborn became inspired by a show of Francesco Clemente’s work at the Guggenheim Museum of Art.  She saw a large painting (148 x 164”) of fabric and paper dyed together titled “The Indigo Room”.   It became the impetus for these paintings.   “I was struck with how he used fabric and paper together in such a large scale.  Paper has always been an important medium to me.  This painting showed me a new way of creating.  It was a great leaping off point.”   Other inspiration comes from Inca, Aztec, Egyptian Art and the use of symbols.  Writings like Chinese characters, the Rosetta Stone, Petroglyphs also give inspiration to the artist.  “Even though I look at diverse cultures they all resonate with me when building up the surfaces of my paintings.”
